Lorenz, a man ahead of his time, was instrumental in the inception of the theory of chaos. Dr. Lorenz's 1963 paper, "Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow," in the Journal of Atmospheric Sciences, marked the beginning of the new field of chaos theory and application, 12 years before other scientists -- biologists, physicists, chemists, geologists and physicians -- took up the challenge His famous discovery of random behavior in atmospheric modeling directly leads to the conclusion that long-term weather forecasting is intrinsically impossible. Additionally, the three Lorenz equations, the Lorenz attractor, and the butterfly effect are described in detail. |
