The MUnIE-Project

What it is about

The DAAD supports a market and employability orientation at higher education institutions in Africa through the program „Entrepreneurial Universities in Africa”. High unemployment rates among university graduates are a major problem in many African countries.

Higher education institutions could tackle the issue by

  • focusing more on (research-based) applied education
  • adjusting their teaching and research more closely to the needs of the labor market in general.

Accordingly, there is high demand at many African universities to establish structures and offerings that are aligned with the needs of the labor market and thus offer better employment prospects and entrepreneurial competencies for their graduates. Therefore, the partners of the Moroccan Entrepreneurial University Initiative address this topic in two Moroccan institutions – the Université Euro-Méditerranéenne de Fès and the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II in Rabat.

  1. Implementation of reform processes to structurally strengthen the labor market orientation at the African partner universities.
  2. (Further) development of study programs and/or of extracurricular courses in topics relevant to the labor market.
  3. Establishment of relevant networks between the participating universities, business partners and public institutions.

Entrepreneurial University

Explore the Potential

MUNIE addresses the challenging situation in Morocco with systematic, innovative and application-oriented solutions at both institutions in Fès and Rabat.

The projects reform measures aim at the promotion of entrepreneurial thinking, teaching and acting at the partner universities. Besides this focus, institutional changes in the structures and processes of the participating institutions are supposed to act as key indicators for the development towards an ‘Entrepreneurial University’.

Using the self-assessment tool HEInnovate, we were able to develop an agenda that meets the needs of our two Moroccan partner universities. HEInnovate is a tool to assess the status quo of the entrepreneurial and innovative nature of the universities to set suitable goals to improve their entrepreneurial structures.

This includes:

Improving the labor market and employability orientation
of the universities

Strengthening the contacts between the Moroccan economy and science

Making Morrocan graduates more employable. And ultimately:

Founding of sustainable networks between industry and science

HEInnovate encompasses 8 facettes which are to be considered in order to strengthen the entrepreneurial agenda of the universities.

These include:

  • Leadership and Governance
  • Organisational Capacity: Funding, People and Incentives
  • Entrepreneurial Teaching and Learning
  • Preparing and Supporting Entrepreneurs
  • Digital Transformation and Capability
  • Knowledge Exchange and Collaboration
  • The Internationalised Institution
  • Measuring Impact
