Navigation and General Purpose Service Robot
In the afternoon there was a lot of media attention. Multiple TV-stations were reporting about the European Robotics League in the Italian TV.
Afterwards the task benchmarks for navigation and general purpose took place. We had two perfect rounds for the navigation task. Lisa navigated to three waypoints with changes in the environment like closing doors that cross Lisa’s path and obstacles of different size and kind or a person were placed in front of the robot while she was navigating. On the third round the Kinect was not functional. Since we changed to the new Microsoft Kinect 2 we are facing USB bandwidth problems. The Kinect is reserving the fill bandwidth of the whole laptop and also blocks different ports. This is currently our biggest hardware issue. Beside this issue the test was a real success. The firs two runs had max score. Lisa followed the operator out of the apartment and even found the way back. The entrance door that was closed after leaving the apartment was opened by her (by gently pushing). Malte received a piece of chocolate to award his achievement.
On the general purpose service robot task the results were more mixed. In all three rounds we got three achievements but in all rounds we ha different kinds of errors. First she was able to distinguish between Madison and a Person when Luca, who was the referee for the task was giving the command via speech. As Raphael was speaking she immediately understood him and executed the tasks partially. Somehow she didn’t not the answer to “What does CD-ROM stand for in computing”. In the next rounds she understood Luca well but executed the task only with unwillingness.
