Ready for departure! Next destination ICRA Mobile Manipulation Challenge in Singapore

Roughly a month ago we have unveiled a new robot named Grimey for the ICRA Mobile Manipulation Challenge qualification process in Singapore. Among ca. 100 teams we now have been chosen as one out of 3 for receiving travel support by the organizers. In total there will be 13 teams in the competition at the end of the month. You’ll find a complete list here.

The goal for the ICRA MMC is to transport cubes from a starting area to a working area in a time limit of 10 minutes.  Points are awarded for each cube that will be placed in the working area. Then as a much harder task the robot should stack the cubes. If a team builds a structure up to 1.2m they are awarded with a prize of 20.000 US$. In order to make the problem a even more challenging one for the teams, the robot has a size limit of 0.8m x 0.8m x 1.5m, meaning that . Note 1.5m is the length, not the height. This means that the robots have to stack cubes on cubes, and if some cubes are stacked we have to stack those cubes again on an other set of cubes. We were already able to stack cubes up to 0.8m but we were not limited by the height of the robot. For the competition itself we have to change the design of the robot fundamentally.

The competition is held together with the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) and will be held from May 29 to June 3, 2017 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

Currently we are sitting in Frankfurt at the airport and wait for the opening of the gate. All lugage has been accepted. Phew. Last time we were in Frankfurt was on our way to China, where we had to disassemble the robot completely to make it fit into the weight limits.

Our team is looking forward to attend the ICRA Mobile Manipulation Challenge.
